What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are the most permanent solution available at this time for patients seeking that perfect natural-looking and healthy white smile. Implants are a great choice for patients that have broken, damaged, or missing teeth. Implants act as a substitute of a tooth root that anchors in the jawbone and allows the dentist to place tooth-like “crown” on top of it upon healing. They are extremely durable, and are built to last (with appropriate care) upwards of 25 years.

Implant-supported dental restorations(crown and bridges) look and function a lot like natural teeth, and allow patients to speak and eat comfortably. They feel natural in the mouth, and do not cause gum or mouth irritation like with other restorative solutions. In fact, implants preserve the surrounding jaw bone and minimize bone loss that otherwise happens with loss of natural teeth. Implants provide long lasting results, and if cared for properly they can last a lifetime.

What are the Benefits of Dental Implants?

Implants replace missing teeth, enabling a healthy and confident lifestyle, they preserve adequate amounts of  natural bone in the mouth, and help to stimulate new bone growth. This decreases the notorious collapse of facial architecture associated with aging.

Implant-based dentistry is a predictable, esthetically superior and durable solution that provides long term value both, financially and functionally compared to other restorative options.

Dental Implants restore full chewing power, and are as strong as (or stronger then) natural teeth.

What to Expect During the Dental Implant Process?

If your treatment involves placement of dental implants, keep in mind that multiple appointments will be required. First, a consultation will be needed  to discuss your goals and preferences as well as to assess the current condition of your mouth, take necessary X Rays, Cat Scans and/or photographs, discuss and  coordinate ideas with your dentist(and medical doctor, if needed) to determine the best treatment plan. Once the treatment plan is finalized,  we are ready to begin the implant process, and the next step involves placing the appropriately chosen implant into the jawbone. This process is minimally invasive and often can be done with local anesthesia alone. After this step is complete there is a healing process of 3-6 months that must occur to allow for “integration”(i.e. bony fusion) of the implant with the surrounding jaw bone.

This allows the implant to function like a natural tooth root in the mouth. In order for the implant to remain sturdy, and provide the required support, the patient must have enough bone present in the jaw. If necessary, bone grafts can be done prior to or at the time of implant placement to provide the adequate support and to ensure longevity of the implant.

Once the healing process is complete, the patient returns to our office to verify successful  integration and to prepare the implant for the restorative (dental) phase of the process. An abutment (i.e. connector) is placed on top of the implant, and this allows your dentist to fix tooth-like porcelain crown securely in place. Custom crowns (and sometimes abutments) are made to match the shape, size, and color of your natural teeth. Temporary crowns may be necessary until patients return to have the permanent crown installed.
